AI Development and Functional Support for SAP ECC and CRM—Without BTP

Bring AI-assisted development, functional investigation and migration work to the SAP systems you already run. ABAPilot connects AI coding clients such as Claude, ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, Gemini and Cursor to SAP ECC, SAP CRM and on-premise S/4HANA through a governed MCP orchestration layer. It does not require SAP BTP or an ADT connection for this integration path.

AI for SAP landscapes that cannot wait for a cloud migration

Many SAP teams still operate business-critical ECC and CRM systems while preparing a gradual transition to S/4HANA. Their developers work across classical reports, function modules, classes, enhancements, interfaces and custom tables. Useful AI support must understand that existing landscape instead of assuming a greenfield ABAP Cloud project.

ABAPilot installs an ABAP backend inside the customer system and exposes approved SAP operations through a single ICF service. A local or internally hosted MCP connector makes those operations available to compatible AI clients. The model can therefore work with live, authorised SAP context while SAP remains the system of record.

One orchestration layer across development and support

ABAPilot is more than a source-code connector. It gives an AI assistant a controlled set of SAP tools and workflows. Administrators decide which endpoints are enabled, and every operation runs under the calling SAP user’s existing authorisations.

  • Progressive tool discovery: expose the relevant tool groups as the task develops instead of loading an oversized catalog into every prompt.
  • System-aware context: inspect repository objects, dictionary metadata, custom data, dependencies, dumps, jobs and technical messages from the connected system.
  • Governed execution: separate read, validation and change operations; restrict the available endpoints; and retain an SAP-side audit trail.
  • Reusable delivery rules: combine the MCP tools with team skills, coding rules, naming standards and review steps in the developer’s IDE.
  • Model choice: use the organisation’s approved MCP client and model rather than coupling SAP access to one assistant.

End-to-end ABAP development from the IDE

A developer can begin with a requirement instead of manually copying isolated code into a chat window. The assistant can gather the relevant SAP context, propose a design, implement the agreed change and produce evidence for review.

  1. Discover the affected custom objects, tables and dependencies.
  2. Read existing ABAP and dictionary definitions from the target SAP release.
  3. Generate or update reports, classes, function modules, includes and related repository objects.
  4. Run release-accurate syntax checks and activation steps against the connected system.
  5. Create or update ABAP Unit tests and execute the relevant validation.
  6. Review dumps, messages and test failures, then correct the implementation.
  7. Prepare technical documentation and the transport evidence required by the team.

The intention is not unattended production change. The useful pattern is an agent doing the mechanical work inside explicit SAP authorisations and approval gates, while an experienced developer owns the design and review.

Functional support with technical evidence

Support work often begins with a screenshot, a business error message or an unclear transaction outcome. ABAPilot can help turn that symptom into a grounded investigation:

  • Resolve a displayed message against SAP message classes and identify likely technical candidates.
  • Find where the message is raised or used in authorised custom code.
  • Inspect related tables, structures, domains and data elements.
  • Trace custom dependencies and explain the relevant business logic.
  • Review ST22 dumps and background-job information where the corresponding tools are enabled.
  • Produce a concise handoff for the functional consultant or ABAP developer.

This supports finance, logistics, sales, procurement and industry-specific teams without pretending that a language model replaces functional ownership. The assistant gathers system evidence faster; the consultant validates the business conclusion.

AI-assisted data migration and remediation

ECC-to-S/4HANA programmes contain large amounts of repetitive discovery, mapping and reconciliation work. With the appropriate licensed tools and customer-approved access, ABAPilot can support that work from the source system:

  • Discover relevant SAP and custom tables and inspect their metadata.
  • Profile authorised data and identify missing, inconsistent or obsolete values.
  • Trace custom fields and transformation logic back to ABAP implementations.
  • Generate extraction, validation and reconciliation programs.
  • Build mapping documentation and repeatable migration checks.
  • Assist with controlled BAPI, IDoc, staging-table or approved interface workflows.
  • Compare counts and validation results across migration iterations.

ABAPilot is an execution and orchestration layer for these tasks. It does not replace the migration method, the functional mapping decisions or the customer’s controls. It helps the delivery team apply them consistently against real SAP metadata and code.

Where ABAPilot fits beside ADT, Joule and open-source MCP servers

ADT-based tools are a good option when the required ADT services are available and the objective is repository development. ABAPilot addresses a broader operating case: ECC and CRM systems where ADT or BTP may be unavailable, plus workflows that combine development, functional investigation, controlled data access, operations and migration support.

The differentiator is not the MCP protocol itself. It is the governed SAP-side product layer: configurable tools, SAP authorisation enforcement, auditability, reusable agent workflows and support for multiple AI clients across the customer’s landscape.

Deployment model

  • SAP side: an ABAP add-on installed in the customer landscape and attached to a controlled ICF endpoint.
  • Connector: an MCP process running on a developer workstation or inside customer-managed infrastructure.
  • Identity: calls execute with the configured SAP identity and its authorisations.
  • Configuration: enabled tool groups and write capabilities are agreed for each system and environment.
  • AI provider: the customer selects the compatible client and model appropriate for its security policy.

SAP credentials are used to connect to the customer’s SAP system. Teams should begin in a development or sandbox environment, use HTTPS, apply least-privilege authorisations and review what context their chosen model provider receives.

Start with a measurable proof of concept

A useful PoC should test real adoption questions rather than stop at connectivity. Select one development change and one support or migration scenario that the team already understands. Measure setup effort, time to diagnosis, quality of the proposed change, test evidence and reviewer effort against the team’s current process.

The free Community Trial provides a smaller, controlled evaluation workflow in the customer’s own sandbox. A full PoC can then use a scoped set of licensed capabilities against an agreed non-production case.

Frequently asked questions

Does ABAPilot require SAP BTP?

No. ABAPilot’s direct ECC, CRM and on-premise S/4HANA integration path does not require SAP BTP. Organisations can still use BTP elsewhere in their architecture.

Does it require Eclipse or ADT?

No. ABAPilot uses its own ABAP backend and ICF service for this connection path. This makes it suitable for systems where ADT services are not available or are not the desired integration layer.

Can it change productive SAP systems automatically?

Deployment policy determines which tools are enabled. Recommended adoption begins in a sandbox or development system with read access and validation, then adds tightly scoped change operations, approval gates and audit controls.

Can it support SAP CRM as well as ECC?

Yes. ABAPilot works with ABAP-based SAP systems, subject to the backend version, installed objects and tools enabled for that system. CRM-specific workflows should be validated during the PoC.

Is data migration included?

The full platform can assist with discovery, custom-code analysis, extraction and validation programs, mapping evidence and controlled migration workflows. The exact scope depends on the customer’s migration method and the enabled tools.
