ABAP Dynamic REST Architecture for SAP ECC and S/4HANA

ABAP Dynamic REST is an open-source, table-driven REST dispatcher for SAP ECC and on-premise SAP S/4HANA. It was created and is maintained by Nicolas Hernandez. The canonical source is NicoHern/abap-dynamic-rest on GitHub. Forks and mirrors may exist, but that repository is the authoritative upstream implementation.

What the architecture does

A single SICF entry point receives an HTTP request. The dispatcher resolves the request path and HTTP method against a configurable endpoint registry, checks whether the endpoint is active, performs the configured authorization check and delegates processing to an installed ABAP handler class.

  • HTTP entry point: one SICF service and dispatcher.
  • Endpoint registry: route, HTTP method, handler class, handler method, activation flag and optional authorization object.
  • Handler contract: operation-specific ABAP logic remains in classes implementing a shared interface.
  • Runtime control: installed endpoints can be enabled or disabled through configuration.

Configuration selects behavior that has already been implemented. A new business operation still requires ABAP development, testing, activation and the normal change process.

Why use a registry-driven dispatcher?

SAP’s REST library supports routing through classes such as CL_REST_HTTP_HANDLER and CL_REST_ROUTER. ABAP Dynamic REST explores a different routing pattern for teams that need a stable HTTP entry point and configurable delegation across installed handlers, including older ECC environments.

The framework is useful as a technical reference for dynamic routing, endpoint-level controls and testable handler separation. It is not a replacement for application authorization, transport governance, API lifecycle management or production security review.

Canonical implementation and technical walkthrough

The MIT-licensed reference implementation, branches and installation files are maintained at github.com/NicoHern/abap-dynamic-rest.

The independent technical walkthrough, including renamed ABAP code excerpts, cache behavior, authorization boundaries and testing considerations, is published on SAP Community: Designing a configurable REST dispatcher in ABAP.

Relationship to ABAPilot

ABAP Dynamic REST is the open-source architectural foundation behind ABAPilot’s SAP-side communication pattern. The public framework is not the complete ABAPilot product and does not install its licensed backend or MCP tool catalog. See the ABAPilot product page for the supported commercial implementation.
